REFERENCING ESSAYS IN MODERN HISTORY Writing a History essay is not just about writing a narrative, biography or chronology of an event, person or period of time: It requires the construction of an argument in answer to the question posed. During research for your essay you will find that the evidence may suggest several answers to the question.

Number your notes consecutively (notes 1 to 43 throughout your essay, not notes 1 to 3 on p. 1, 1 to 5 on p. 2, 1 to 4 on p. 3 and so on). Historians usually use notes rather than in-text referencing styles (such as Harvard), because they allow for the inclusion of more detail.
If you make reference to a work or piece of research without mentioning the author in the text of your essay, then both the author's name and year are usually placed at the end of the sentence in brackets.
List the painter's name, followed by a period. For example: Picasso, Pablo. List the title of the painting in italics, followed by a period. List the year the painting was completed, followed by a period.
